BIOT 100 Life Science for Elementary Educators [GEKN]

This course for future elementary school educators models three-dimensional science teaching and learning by engaging teaching candidates in scientific practices and applying crosscutting concepts to develop a deeper understanding of life science core ideas. In doing so, the course promotes an understanding of life science concepts necessary to teach pre-K to 6th-grade students as identified by the Next Generation Science Standards.

Credit 3 hrs May not be repeated for additional credit

Rationale for Knowledge of the Disciplines - This course is a life science course designed for prospective elementary school teachers. This course actively engages prospective elementary school teachers in the three dimensions of science (1. science practices, 2. content knowledge, and 3. interdisciplinary science concepts) as a model for how to engage their future young learners in three-dimensional (3D) science learning when they begin teaching. In doing so, the course meets the three General Education Outcomes for Natural Science. Through the dimension of science processes, 3D science learning involves interpreting and analyzing data in the media related to the life sciences (Outcome #1). It also involves engaging in informed discussions about the validity of the conclusions from reports in the media related to the life sciences (Outcome #2). Finally, it involves employing available resources to find relevant scientific information related to the life sciences (Outcome #3). As a result of engaging in science practices, students attain a basic knowledge of the current scientific understanding of our natural world (Outcome #2).
