Critical Information

The following are the minimum requirements for an Undergraduate Certificate:

• An undergraduate certificate may only be offered with or after a baccalaureate degree. It cannot be a ‘stand-alone’ certificate provided to students who are not pursuing or have not previously earned a bachelor’s degree. For students pursuing an undergraduate certificate concurrent with a bachelor’s degree, the certificate will be awarded upon graduation. Students pursuing an undergraduate certificate in conjunction with a baccalaureate degree must declare this using the major/minor declaration form. Students not pursuing an undergraduate certificate with a baccalaureate degree must apply to the certificate program through the Office of Admissions.
• An undergraduate certificate will consist of at least six credits at the 300-level or above, all of which must be taken at EMU. Prerequisite or lower-level coursework may be transferred from another university or community college.
• Credits used to satisfy certificate course requirements cannot also fulfill major, minor, or general education requirements.

An undergraduate certificate must require a minimum of 15 credit hours.

Program Admission

In order to be admitted to this Undergraduate Certificate in Classroom and Behavior Management, you have to meet the following conditions:

• You must be either pursuing an undergraduate degree at EMU as part of the Initial Teacher Preparation Program (students with Special Education Major K-12 Emotional Impairment Endorsement - Elementary  or Secondary  are not eligible) or you can apply as a baccalaureate degree holder.
• You must have a cumulative GPA of 2.5, have completed a Certificate Program Application, and have completed the following courses:

• SPGN 251 Introduction to Inclusion and Disabilities Studies in a Diverse Society [GEUS] 3 hrs

• and one course from the following:

• PSY 101 General Psychology Lecture [GEKN] 3 hrs See note
• EDPS 222 Human Development and Learning 4 hrs
• EDPS 225 Life Span Human Growth and Development 4 hrs

  Note - When completed with PSY 103 , PSY 101 satisfies four credits toward Knowledge of the Disciplines-Natural Science  

Certificate Requirements: 17 hours

• SPEI 360 Theory and Practice of EI 4 hrs
• SPEI 401L2 Elementary Methods in EI [GELB] 4 hrs
• SPEI 449 Beyond Behavior 3 hrs
• SPGN 395 Children, Adolescents, and Young Adults with Disabilities: School, Family and Community Interaction 3 hrs
• SPGN 461 Classroom Management and Intervention Strategies for Students with Disabilities 3 hrs
